Fun Facts on the Origin of Sriracha Sauce
Some food products are so well-known there’s no question about their origin. However, unless you know the colourful story about the origin of Sriracha sauce, you could be forgiven for thinking that the sauce originated in Vietnam.
The original Sriracha sauce was first created in the 1940s in a small town called Si Racha on the eastern Gulf coast of Thailand, about two hours south of Bangkok. The sauce was served with fresh seafood dishes offered by a small local restaurant in the now famously-named town.
Sriracha Sauce’s Fame Spreads
The Gulf coast of Thailand has been a popular area for tourists for many years, and the restaurant gained a well-deserved reputation for serving great seafood and a particularly delicious sauce. Vietnamese tourists visiting the area would often dine at the restaurant as many had heard about the unique sauce it served. Finally, one group of tourists asked the owner how the sauce was made and took the recipe back to Vietnam, where it became an instant hit.
The famed taste of original Sriracha sauce spread to the US when Vietnamese people resettled in the country after the Vietnam War, and Americans got their first taste of what became known throughout the world as the original Sriracha Sauce.
The Vietnamese used the tangy, rich taste of Sriracha sauce to flavour bowls of pho, bahn mi sandwiches, spring rolls, and a host of other traditional Vietnamese foods. Sriracha sauce became a regular condiment seen on the table in Vietnamese homes and restaurants.
As Thais and Vietnamese people started emigrating and travelling to other countries, the recipe for the original Sriracha sauce spread. They found that chilli peppers had been traded and cultivated all over the world from their origins in South and Central America. Garlic was also a common crop in most countries. Adding vinegar brought from Thailand and sugar and salt to the local chillis and garlic meant they had the basic ingredients for Sriracha sauce.
