Sriracha Brownies
Michelle took her inspiration from her own Mexican background as well as many artisanal chocolate lines that feature chocolate bars infused with chilli. Her recipe uses three types of chocolate, coffee and Sriracha sauce to create deliciously rich, chewy brownies that everyone will love.
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp Sriracha sauce
- 1/3 cup cocoa powder
- I tsp instant coffee or espresso powder
- 2 oz unsweetened and finely chopped chocolate
- 6 oz 60% cacao dark chocolate chips
- 1 ¼ cup boiling water
- ½ cup melted butter
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 large egg yolks
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 ½ cups sugar
- 1 tsp salt
Preparation
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees (177 ˚C)
- Whisk together the cocoa powder, coffee, and boiling water until smooth. Add the unsweetened chocolate and chocolate chips. Whisk until the chocolate is mostly melted.
- Whisk in the melted butter and vegetable oil (Don’t worry if the mixture looks curdled or broken).
- Add the eggs, egg yolks and vanilla extract and continue to whisk until smooth.
Whisk or stir in the sugar until fully incorporated. - Add the Sriracha sauce and stir until smooth.
- Add the flour and salt and stir until combined.
- Scrape the batter into a 9 inch by 13 inch (23 cm x 33 cm) pan that has had the bottom and sides lightly coated with oil, butter, or cooking spray.
- Bake until a toothpick inserted halfway from the edge and the centre of the pan comes out mostly clean (approximately 35 minutes).
- Transfer the pan to a wire rack and allow to cool to 1 ½ hours before serving. Enjoy!
Not Too Spicy
With only two tablespoons of Sriracha sauce in a pan of brownies, your brownies should be mild enough for your kids and people not used to spicy foods to enjoy. The spice tends to “wake up” and enhance the chocolate flavour rather than compete with it. Many people find regular brownies taste disappointingly bland after trying the sweet and spicy brownies.
